Binary vs decimal — why your 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Drive manufacturers sell capacity in decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but Windows reports size in binary units (1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). The same bytes divided by the bigger binary unit gives a smaller number: 10¹2; ÷ 1024⁴ ≈ 931 GiB, which Windows labels "GB". Nothing is missing — the two standards just count differently.
